Having a great product design is as important as having good web design. Here’s why (with examples)!
You have probably heard it million times that a good design is essential for every business. But why does a good design matter?
Let’s first know what makes a good design so that we are on the same page.
In simple words, there is an intangible value to a good design. It is way more than getting potential customers remember your brand name or lower your bounce rate. A good design echoes professionalism, proficiency, and passion. When it comes to your business or company your design is what speaks on your behalf when you can’t talk to the customers yourself.
Now, Let’s take a closer look at Why a Good Design Matters.
1. A good Web Design = good market value + consumer trust
Your website is the most important marketing tool in your arsenal. When a visitor reaches your website, a single glance can turn the visitor into a customer or can push that person to click away.
Again, a good website design is not limited to the look and feel of the website rather also focuses on the usability of the website. Thus, a good website design not only looks good but also communicates well with the users in terms of functionality.
On the other hand, a poorly designed website interferes with the user-experience and often is hard to trust. Thus, we can say that a poor interface design often results in rejection.
Dropbox tops my list as an example of good website design. Let’s know what makes it brilliant:
Its website design is simple and gets straight to the point. Homepage supports a simple yet powerful sub-headline that allows users to figure out what Dropbox really does in a jiffy.
Further, it’s homepage design uses lot of white space, a large & relevant image with supporting copy and a compelling call-to-action that says “Try free for 30 days”

2. Product Design
Product design makes an integral part of product marketing and this is what differentiates your brand from others. To sell your product effectively, you need a compelling product design in place.
Product design refers to the way you present the features and benefits of the product in front of the consumers. A good product design can give you an edge over your competition.
As many people make product decisions on the basis of product design especially when they get many options to choose from. Your product must be competing with several products in the market with same features and benefits but a better product design can make your product more salable.
A simple change in the product design can boost or drop your product’s sale. Let’s dive deep at this point. For instance – Desktops & Laptops are two different product design of same product-personal computers. However, we have witnessed in the recent years, sales of desktops have declined majorly whereas laptops are enjoying more market share. This all is the result of a simple change in the product design.
Three indisputably game-changing products by apple; Firstly the release of iPhone in 2007, followed by iPad a few years later and recently mini iPad in 2012. All apple products are an example of great product designs. These products are pleasing to the eye, easy to use, and comes packed with unique features.
3. Good product packaging = Increased sales
Here we can go by the old adage, ‘A book is judged by its cover’ in the same way your product is judged on the basis of its packaging design. Though many consumers may not entirely judge a book by its cover they surely make a snap judgment about the product based on the packaging design.
Good packaging design can change the perception of your product. Even a minor change can make a huge difference in how a product is perceived and consumed by your customers. So, you need to take calculative design decisions when it comes to product packaging.
PakFactory, a leading custom packaging company, suggests that a great packaging design is the mixture of an attractive design & a clear brand message. An attractive design catches the eye of your target audience whereas brand message provides relevant information about your product.
When a product is kept on a shelf or hanging on a rack, it is competing with several other products, here, packaging design is what makes it stand apart. A good packaging design makes an emotional connection with the audience and persuades the consumer to buy it.
The new packaging of Smirnoff Caipiroska ( a Brazilian drink) is an excellent example of good packaging design. To launch the new fruit flavors of this drink, the company created bottles using the texture of the fruit to show different flavors like berries, lemon and passion fruit. This product design was a hit with the consumers as they could enjoy the unique experience of peeling a drink made of fruit.

As per a study by ProBlogger, designers have only 50 milliseconds to make a good first impression. There are thousands of products, services and brands competing for the attention of customers, what makes them distinctive is a good design.A good design is like the first handshake you have with a prospective client that makes you decide whether you would like to further this meeting in the future or not. A good design is beyond the attractive aesthetic, it is powerful and drives conversions. Design keeps the content user-friendly in many ways such as:
- Before a visitor reads your content, a good design communicates with them. It guides users, where your eyes should go first on a page and highlights important information where the reader needs to spend more time.
- Makes use of typography, varied font sizes so that the messaging comes across in a powerful way. Further, it reinforces the message in context with interesting imagery and color.
- In other words, design acts like a translation service that simplifies the complex language be it data, software capabilities, information etc. by translating them into an easier to digest and understandable format.

The label of your product is no less than your sales pitch to your potential customer and it can make all the difference between a buy or a pass.
An effective label comes with a good design that looks captivating, interesting and is packed with all relevant information a buyer needs to make an educated purchase.
