Custom Wood Furniture

Thirty years ago, in a small garage behind Hyde Park’s famous Medici restaurant, our business began with unfinished pine bookcases at a few standard sizes. Buoyed by demand from the University of Chicago, we expanded our reach to hardwoods-- and then cabinets, and then custom built-ins, followed a few years later by desks, occasional tables, and office pieces. Yes! We are happy to help designers work through issues related to their designs, be they aesthetic or structural. We’re committed to well-crafted design and to that end are always interested in discussing the particulars of a design’s construction. We process hundreds of fully customized orders every year and are experienced at offering consultation on everything from cost-efficiency to structural integrity to functionality.

Yes! We’re happy to revise or otherwise contribute to digital renderings of designs, though we ask that interested designers put together some sort of sketch of their proposed design (either digitally or using pencil and paper) before approaching us.

Yes! Though we do not retail lumber, we order and manage all materials necessary for production. We work with all variety of hardwood and softwood lumber including but not limited to ash, cherry, maple, pine, poplar, walnut and white oak. We also work with a variety of veneers and other sheet goods, including various plywood veneers and MDF veneers. We have a lot of experience working specifically with Baltic birch plywood. A hand-rubbed, Danish oil and wax finish is our most common finish, but we’re capable of all varieties of stains and sealants, so long as they can be applied by hand. We hand finish all of our work exclusively. We have also worked extensively with paint finishes and have experience with less common finishes, including plant-based, eco-friendly Danish soap (a completely VOC-free finishing option) as well as ebonizing white oak.

Yes! We insist on prototyping a design for approval by the designer before beginning any larger production run. We’re also happy to create samples of different finishes on different wood types.

Yes. We’re capable of both large batch and small batch production.
