A new year means that you’re starting to work on goals to better yourself and the people around you. The same can go for how you run your business. While long term goals are great to strive for, there are smaller habits that can have a huge impact on your business. Here are seven business habits you should form this year!
Say “no” more often
Entrepreneurs are naturally an ambitious bunch. That’s why sometimes they’re inclined to say yes to every request or opportunity. However, there are a few reasons that you need to start saying “no” more often. The most obvious reason is because you don’t need to take every opportunity. Think about what you really NEED to do. If you only pick the most promising ones, you can put all your energy into making it a success and creating more buzz than doing several smaller ones. You’ll save a lot of time and energy. However, a less apparent reason is because every opportunity you take is one you take from someone else – that opportunity could be one they really NEEDED. So, this year you should learn when to say no and more importantly…
Learn when to take “no” for an answer
It seems that people in business love saying “don’t take no for an answer.” However, this is a misguided sentiment that we explained in this article. In this case, it was because the perseverance that “not taking no” exuded that got the article’s author in trouble. This year, though, you should take no for an answer in other senses too. As Jeff Staple explained in his recent interview with us, you don’t want to be pushy when it comes to selling your brand or product. You want your brand or product and all the work you put in to speak for itself. If you persist too much with a publication or retailer, you can burn a bridge that could have turned into something in the future.
Slow down + think it through
Another habit that entrepreneurs often fall into is shooting from the hip. Sometimes when you think of a great idea, you want to carry it out immediately. But sometimes you have to slow down and think! While an idea can seem great at first, when you begin to deconstruct it you could realize that it might not be the right next step. Fast wins are great, but big wins are better. If you ever have an idea for a product or marketing campaign, first ask the question “why?” Why are you doing this? Why is it right for your business? If you can’t come up with two good answers to those questions, then it’s not the right direction. If you can’t come up with the answers, get a second opinion!
Come up with action plans
If you want to be a proper business, you have to stop winging it. As romantic as it sounds, winging it and hoping for the best doesn’t always work! So this year, make the commitment to create action plans before attempting something. Do your research and make the best plan based on that research. However, these plans aren’t set in stone. You should revisit your plan and adjust it. But at the same time, you have to use it as your blueprint and map of the next month, quarter, and year.
Get a good night’s sleep
Okay, this one is a bit abstract, I know. But, you are no use to your business if you’re not in tip-top shape. So, make sure you give your body the attention it needs. One of the easiest ways to do this is to get on a regular sleep schedule. Yes, I know your impulse is to work 24/7. However, give your body a chance to recover from all the work and stress. About three hours before going to bed, abstain from drinking alcohol or caffeine. Also, workout regularly, but aim for the morning time to jump start energy. Remember, most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep. Yes, you can function on less. But doesn’t your business deserve the best of you?
Know when to take a break
Ah, the age old question. Is “all work and no play” the right way to go about things? No! While working hard is never a bad thing, you have to learn when to step back and take a break. You have tons to do and think about as an entrepreneur. You have to be the CEO, CMO, CFO, and all the other acronyms all at once. However, overwhelming yourself with your duties is an easy way to burn out. Listen to your body and go with your gut. If your body is telling you to slow down, then listen to it. You don’t have to take a week off. But maybe instead of working through lunch, sit down in a restaurant and relax. Maybe take a night to watch a movie and cook yourself a nice dinner instead of pulling an all-nighter. No one is going to think less of you as a business owner. As much as you want to be a super entrepreneur, you have to think about yourself first!
