ACTION! Maker’s Row+New York City Webisode Series Set to Premiere 5/14

When it comes to fashion and design, the Big Apple is the center of the universe. For decades, New York City has been world renowned as the home of the greatest creatives from Calvin Klein to Marc Jacobs. Whether it be music, art, or design, creatives flock from all corners of the world to “make it” in New York. It’s no coincidence that New York has catapulted the careers of this century’s design, art, and fashion icons. New York’s rich ecosystem of private and public institutions have made New York the mainstage for innovation and advancement. Two notable partners in these sectors are the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Their historic support, coupled with supportive programs and initiatives, have played a significant role in the success of many of New York’s iconic designers.

As America looks to a resurgence of domestic manufacturing, businesses focus  on competing in today’s on-demand economy. Maker’s Row, NYCEDC, the CFDA, and Google have teamed up to bring you Maker’s Row+New York City,  a six part webisode series hosted by Maker’s Row Cofounder & CEO, Matthew Burnett and features six NYC-based designers. The series is set to premiere on Monday, May 14 at Google Chelsea Market; launch is scheduled for this summer on CFDA’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/cfda.

Google has highlighted Maker’s Row in their NY economic impact business profile, and is supporting the series premiere at their new Chelsea Market location as part of NYCxDESIGN, the citywide celebration of design. Each episode will feature a designer who tells the unique story of their brand, creative process, and personal experiences in manufacturing  in New York City, and their affiliation with CFDA and NYCEDC programs. Bode, Carlos Campos, Catbird, Gigi Burris, Haus Alkire, and WHIT are scheduled to be featured in the series.

Included in the series is a conversation with Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor of Housing and Economic Development.  She stopped by to talk about the NYC fashion industry including Made in New York designer designation, manufacturing throughout the City and our partnerships with industry leaders and educators. Also featured is CFDA President and CEO, Steven Kolb, who will discuss how the CFDA’s programs, including the Fashion Manufacturing Initiative (FMI), provide critical resources in a variety of ways to support fashion production in New York City and regain its historical status as a major hub for domestic manufacturing in North America.

After years of fashion production moving overseas, NYC’s production industry dramatically decreased. Through key programs and initiatives, NYC is again becoming the home of premiere design and also a place to “make”. The Made In NY:Fashion Initiative is becoming increasingly popular, as the list of designers and producers that make their products in New York City continues to grow.
