Bookbinding Meets Tech in San Francisco

Bookbinding in the age of iPads? There’s two words you wouldn’t normally find in the same sentence. But that’s exactly what DODOcase is doing: making tablet cases with time-honored bookbinding techniques to prevent the fading art from disappearing completely. We spoke to Emilie at DODOcase to learn more about the passion fueling the brand.

MR: How did DODOcase start?

Emilie: The birth of DODOcase really came out of realizing that with all the new e-readers and iPads that were hitting the market the age old art of bookbinding risked going extinct. Our co-founders Patrick Buckley and Craig Dalton, decided to create a line of cases for these new tech tablets using traditional bookbinding techniques in the hopes of keeping the art alive, hence our tagline: protects from extinction.

MR: How did you decide to manufacture in the U.S.?

Emilie: We believe in the local community and wanted to be part of a resurrection of manufacturing in the US. All of our products are handmade right here in our San Francisco Dog Patch Workshop.

MR: Do you work with a factory, or produce in-house?

Emilie: When we first got started we actually revived one of the last standing bookbinderies in SF, which was about to go under. The family-run business thrived under the demand for our bookbound cases. Since then, we have brought the bookbinding portion of our business in-house and our original partner continues to thrive.
