Social media is a free marketing tool every business owner should keep in their arsenal. In today’s tech filled world, social media has become vital to promoting your business. Most people think they just don’t have the time to keep up with social media. It can be a constant stream of information, some of it useless, that can become overwhelming. Here are four tips to help you start using social media to your advantage:
1) Take lots of pictures.
We live in an age of the ‘cameraphone.’ Most phones do have decent cameras. Make good use of it. Take as many images as you can of activities and events related to your brand. Store them and use them to create the story you want to project for your business. Keeping record of your photos can be very useful to you. I recently completed an application for a program that requested I prove through images, that I actually play an active role in the pattern-making, draping, etc. of my line. I found all of the images I needed from my phone.
2) Utilize existing campaigns.
The first step is taking lots of image. The next step is using them. Utilize campaigns that are already in place to capitalize on their exposure. Throwback Thursdays are a great an easy time to post images of past activities and events. Use images that tell a story and can lead to engagement from your audience.
Examples: Throwback Thursdays (#TBT), Flashback Fridays (#FBF), etc.

3) Explore your page.
Most social media platforms provide insights into your activity and your audience (look for the ‘Insights’ tab). This invaluable data can help you better reach and cater to your audience. The ‘Insights’ section can let you know which country your audience lives in, their age group, what the best times to post are, which past posts have gotten the best results, and more. You can analyze this information to make your future content more successful. This information is all free and easy to navigate.
4) Set aside half an hour per day to focus on social media.
The next step is finding time to implement campaigns and explore your page. Try to set aside half an hour per day to focus just on social media. Using tools like Hootsuite, you can schedule posts in advance. You can literally schedule posts weeks ahead of time. Be very careful with this tool, though. This week, there was a tweet from just-deceased Joan Rivers’ profile about the new iphone. Review your posts frequently to ensure they’re still relevant.
